LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS 2022
Geoff Lyell
Otago Regional Council
Independent
Which communities will you speak for and about at the council table?
As a Dunedin representative to the ORC it is imperative that I liaise with as many groups and Individuals as possible to get a good understanding of the goals and aspirations of the wider community. If successful I intend to treat this role as a full time job without other work commitments therefore allowing more time for genuine consultation.
What is the number one social and economic issue for the community and for the city? (DCC question). What is the key issue for the region at this time and for the next 10 years? (ORC question)
Preserving and enhancing the natural environment, but doing so in a way that is economically sustainable.
How will you elevate community aspirations? How will you know what they are? (DCC question only)
Under the Local Government Act 2002, councils are required to maintain and improve opportunities for Māori to contribute to local government decision-making processes. How will you honour this obligation in your role with the Dunedin City Council/Otago Regional Council?
Continue to support co governance initiatives. There has been good progress in this area. I do however have concerns that co governance is morphing into co government. Policies such as the central government 3 waters proposal with it co government structure runs the very real risk of alienating many peoples.
What is your usual approach to achieving collegial and constructive relationships with the people you work with? What is the most important element of a constructive working relationship?
Listen with respect. Play the ball, not the man. Find common ground and build on that. Maintain honesty and integrity. Don’t mention the All Blacks (at the moment). Have a sense of humour. Be willing to concede to sound argument. Listen with respect.
The DCC's place-based community fund has been a game changer for community-led development and growing connected and resilient communities in Ōtepoti. What more will you do as a councillor to support community development in the city? (DCC candidate question only)
