LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS 2022

Joy Davis

Council
Labour

Which communities will you speak for and about at the council table?

Any and all, but particularly those that struggle to have a voice or navigate the system.

What is the number one social and economic issue for the community and for the city? (DCC question). What is the key issue for the region at this time and for the next 10 years? (ORC question)

Social cohesion . Our city is growing rapidly, and is increasing in cultural diversity.

How will you elevate community aspirations? How will you know what they are? (DCC question only)

I have 20 years as a trusted Community Advocate. Over that time I have found that observing, listening and partnering with community groups and individuals gives one an understanding of the hopes and dreams , needs and wants our communities have.

Under the Local Government Act 2002, councils are required to maintain and improve opportunities for Māori to contribute to local government decision-making processes. How will you honour this obligation in your role with the Dunedin City Council/Otago Regional Council?

I totally support the growing partnership Council has with mana whenua and their representation on key council committees. I will take up every opportunity I can to learn more from them and am delighted DCC now has a Manahautu (General manager )Maori to offer us strategic advice and support.

What is your usual approach to achieving collegial and constructive relationships with the people you work with? What is the most important element of a constructive working relationship?

Listening! Giving the person your full attention. Trying to approach the relationship or issue with an open mind, being prepared to learn and change ones potion based on the evidence presented.

The DCC's place-based community fund has been a game changer for community-led development and growing connected and resilient communities in Ōtepoti. What more will you do as a councillor to support community development in the city? (DCC candidate question only)

Everything I can!
Local people bringing local solutions, provide huge bang for the ratepayer buck, connecting communities and making them great places to live.
Having lobbied for this for years, worked in this space, partnered with others to make it happen on the Taieri and continue to support groups across the City - I am all in!
