LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS 2022

Randal Scott

Council

Which communities will you speak for and about at the council table?

I want to be a voice for the voiceless in Dunedin. Ōtepoti is a wonderful place to live for most of its residents, but there are a significant number of people in our city who only survive and not thrive. I want us to create a city where everyone can flourish! In order to do that, the two most important things I want us to provide are secure housing and work for everyone who wants it.

What is the number one social and economic issue for the community and for the city? (DCC question). What is the key issue for the region at this time and for the next 10 years? (ORC question)

The number one social issue is the lack of secure housing. This is having a devastating effect on children and families in Dunedin. The number one economic issue is the huge waste of human potential I see. There are a large number of people in our city who are fit and able to work. We just have to find or create suitable jobs for them.

How will you elevate community aspirations? How will you know what they are? (DCC question only)

I will elevate community aspirations by working with others to create a city where everyone can flourish! I know lots of people in Dunedin through church, sport, education and my places of work. I know the aspirations of people in the communities I work with because I ask them!

Under the Local Government Act 2002, councils are required to maintain and improve opportunities for Māori to contribute to local government decision-making processes. How will you honour this obligation in your role with the Dunedin City Council/Otago Regional Council?

I will push for the council to display manaakitanga by consulting with Māori on a regular basis. I would like to see co-governance in terms of managing our responsibilities and resources, as long as Māori representatives are elected and not appointed.

What is your usual approach to achieving collegial and constructive relationships with the people you work with? What is the most important element of a constructive working relationship?

I enjoy dreaming about a better future, debating options, and putting a plan in place to see good ideas come to fruition. My usual approach is to listen, clearly explain my ideas and then back any collective decision. The most important element of a constructive working relationship is to honour, respect and value other people's perspectives.

The DCC's place-based community fund has been a game changer for community-led development and growing connected and resilient communities in Ōtepoti. What more will you do as a councillor to support community development in the city? (DCC candidate question only)

I will encourage those who have the means and talent to generously share their time and resources with others. I will seek to involve people in the life of the city who feel like they don't have much to offer, firstly by finding them meaningful employment.
