LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS 2022
Tracey Pita
Council
Which communities will you speak for and about at the council table?
Māori, Pasifika, low-socio economic, education, mental health; Saddle Hill Community Board, Greater Green Island.
What is the number one social and economic issue for the community and for the city? (DCC question). What is the key issue for the region at this time and for the next 10 years? (ORC question)
Housing - weather-tight and warm; and accessibility.
How will you elevate community aspirations? How will you know what they are? (DCC question only)
I am already an efficient community connector and leader and I am connected across a wide range of demographics in the wider Dunedin community. I will remain connected and aspire to connect further, by attending events, and visiting different groups. I will continue to be an active and visible member of my local communities so people feel like they can approach me for support or have questions. I will also encourage people to get involved with council meetings and such.
Under the Local Government Act 2002, councils are required to maintain and improve opportunities for Māori to contribute to local government decision-making processes. How will you honour this obligation in your role with the Dunedin City Council/Otago Regional Council?
I believe there needs to be a more authentic connection with hapū and whānau, inclusive of the already established connections to mana whenua. I have good connections already with Araiteuru Marae having only being in Dunedin for 2-years - this is because of my approachable manner and ability to connect with people.
What is your usual approach to achieving collegial and constructive relationships with the people you work with? What is the most important element of a constructive working relationship?
Respect and integrity. In kōrero - being open-hearted and actively listen with the intention to listen (and not to respond). Being humble to admit when and where you got something wrong.
The DCC's place-based community fund has been a game changer for community-led development and growing connected and resilient communities in Ōtepoti. What more will you do as a councillor to support community development in the city? (DCC candidate question only)
I believe and have recent experience with, community development from a grassroots perspective is the only way a strong and an authentic community gets developed and is cultivated over time. This is my strength in building strong resilient relationships over my relief teaching career and recently here in Dunedin.
